CPD or Not to CPD

By Paul R Salmon FCILT, FSCM

My ‘Saturday Soundbite’ If we want logistics and supply chain to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with professions like engineering, law and medicine, is CPD a “nice to have” or a “must-do”?

In every recognised profession, CPD (Continuing Professional Development) isn’t optional, it’s the foundation of credibility. Engineers risk losing chartered status without it. Doctors/medical professionals and lawyers can’t practise without demonstrating they remain current and competent.

Logistics and supply chain professional are no different. Our environment is evolving rapidly, global disruption, sustainability, AI and geopolitical uncertainty are all redefining how we deliver.

If we want to move from being seen as operators to true professionals, CPD must be embedded as a non-negotiable habit.

In Defence, where supply chains and logistics underpin operational readiness, this feels even more critical. CPD isn’t about ticking boxes; it’s about raising standards, driving innovation and ensuring we remain credible against peers in industry and across the profession.

So what do you think?
Is CPD in logistics and supply chain a nice-to-have or a must-do for our profession to truly be recognised?
